stuff and things

1. I bought a laptop last week. It's shiny and pretty and I love it so much!

What I didn't love was the gigantic, useless thing called Vista installed on
it. In a fit of daring, I spent a large chunk of time partitioning drives
and installed Linux. It's pretty fabulous and I love it. If I don't have any
issues after a few weeks, I'm tempted to just overwrite all of Vista. The
forums for my particular build (Ubuntu, for the curious) are very friendly
and helpful.

I might buy a book on it, too.

2.

So last fall, I was tooling around the internet as I am wont to do. Through
some weirdo link-following, I ended up at an LJ comm for women who eschew
traditional menstrual products and use one of the silicone or latex cups
instead.

My first thought was, "What is this crazy madness?"

Of course, I kept reading because it was sort of like a trainwreck. But then
it started to make a weird sort of sense and I became intrigued. Cue a trip
to Whole Foods in early December 2007 and suddenly I find myself the proud
owner of a Diva Cup.

This month is my third cycle with my cup and I am NEVER going back to
tampons and pads. I know it sounds creepy and bizarre, but it's so much less
hassle, annoyance, and skin irritation than paper products.

I would highly suggest a cup to anyone who asked.

3. Planning moves apace on my [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang story. I've worked
out a background story and timeline for everything and now just need to do
that forward. [livejournal.com profile] rue_quercus has been invaluable in this process.

That is all for now, I believe.

If I had the extra cash, I might have gone Mac, but I'm really pleased with my purchase. And with Linux.

I'm not a programmer or anything like that and Linux is very different than what I'm used to, but I think a good book will give me the info I need to be more comfortable.
