OK. Since the upgrade to XP, my computer is not recognizing my CD-RW as a drive. It appears under the device listing, but it's not installing as a drive letter.
You probably need to download a driver for it from Microsoft's homepage-- It should be in a Windows update package (Your XP might even automatically download it when it searches for updates, but I would check out the website just to make sure). That's the only thing I can think of that might cause that problem.
That's odd. Is it a CD-RW that you had installed after you bought the comp? Because XP has all those funky security measures that default a lot of settings to the highest security possible. You may just have to tell XP to let the CD-RW have access to your hard drive? Other than that, all I know to recommend would be to completely pull the component and re-install it, plus reinstall any software needed, but someone else probably knows a less drastic solution.
Well, I built my machine from the ground up, so the CD-RW has been there from the beginning. I'm sure it is something wonky with XP that I just need to tweak. Stupid Microsoft.
I've been snarling at XP since I got it-- It's gotten to the point where I refuse to download the new service packs because it's all useless crap I don't need/want that resets my defaults. Since I use a wireless network, I have a firewall on the router and my comp one disabled, but XP freaks and starts frantically pointing at the disabled firewall every time I try to do something with the system (like shut it down). It's just. Grrrrrr. Time consuming.
The whole Windows situation just pisses me off in general. OK, you have a (almost) total lock on the OS market. That doesn't mean you can totally ignore things like, say, quality and performance.
I mean, it's not like I'm trying to do anything special. I just upgraded my OS (for the SOLE purpose of being able to use my iPod, btw, thank *you* Apple for that) and now I want my hardware configuration to be the way its supposed to be.
OH! And also? Would it freaking kill Microsoft to have a free call in helpline for licensed users? Like every person gets 5 free phone calls even. I've owned a Windows machine since 1997 and I've gone through Windows 95, 98, ME, and now XP and, frankly, this is the first time I've had a real problem that I can't work out how to fix.
Someone here at work suggested deleting the RW off my hardware profile because it shows up there and maybe it'll reinstall correctly when I restart.
If that doesn't work it'll be time to call the step-brother even though he's taken to wearing a t-shirt that says, "I'm not your IT department."
