Yes. Me. Again

So I was just reading a review of Phantom of the Opera in the strib. Now, it's the musical version, the Lloyd Webber one. Being performed by "untrained" vocalists, for the most part (except Minnie Driver, who's lip synching), according to the strib.

Now, I'm not here to argue the merits or lack thereof of Andrew Lloyd Webber as a composer. No, my question/observation is this; quality or not, Phantom is an extremely challenging show to sing. There is *no way* an untrained singer could sing Christine. I mean, it was written *for* Sarah Brightman. For her voice specifically.

That's just crazy.

Boy I'm chatty.

Ok - untrained vocalists and LIP SYNCHING is just wrong for this movie. It looks visually stunning but...

Uh...

I'll have to think about this now.

PotO is fuckin' hard to sing. I've been working on Think Of Me and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again with my coach and sometimes I want to cry. I am in supreme envy of Sarah Brightman.

Amen. I'm a mezzo, so I totally fake the top notes the best I can.

That was pretty much my first reaction, but then I went to see it a couple days ago, and it was actually brilliant. The actors playing Christine and Raoul rocked, gave an amazing performance. I have to say, in parts it was better singing than a Boradway performance I saw earlier this year. I've seen Sarah Brightman sing Phantom live; nothing can ever top that, but the film really is amazing. The guy who plays the Phantom is a little weak in places, but that would be my only gripe. These guys had some amazing training.
