long and rambly

So last night [livejournal.com profile] lallybroch threw a stamping party for [livejournal.com profile] clementine21, [livejournal.com profile] everlastingwhy, Beth and I. It was pretty fun and I'm a big sucker for crafts, but I managed to refrain from spending a ton of money I just don't have. The Ru-mate and I did buy one thing, though. A set of seven decorator stamps of toile-style flowers which we are going to use to finish our living room and dining room walls. I think it'll look quite nice.

**

The cable guy came yesterday and installed magic cable for us. It's so excellent. The first thing I did when he left was set the DVR to record CSI:Miami, CSI, and WaT every week. Almost more exciting than that is the fact that he replaced some connectors in the apartment and now my CBS reception is perfect. It's been ghosting images forever and that makes it pretty hard to watch most anything, but now...

**

Hopefully the gods of lazy employees will be with me today so that I can finish the WaT story like I've been trying to for days. Then I'll just have a wee bit of P/O to finish up before I can devote myself to the AU.

**

The stamp demonstrator last night was a very nice woman, Anne. Anne is not involved in fandom at all. Not even peripherally (hi Beth!) and her expression as we were discussing the latest kerfuffle in HP fandom was priceless, but it also just brought home how very strange fandom is. It's not something I think about very often because I'm often right in the middle of it, but on the rare occasions I step outside of myself, it always strikes me what a odd world I've chosen to involve myself in.

Especially slashdom. While I don't personally approve of the 'make everyone gay' school of slashing, I can admit that to an outsider, it probably all looks the same. It's very weird.

**

I'm so very tired. I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open.

**

The Ru-mate and I have now watched all of Season 1 and about 1/4 of Season 2 of Sports Night. I have always been, and will probably always be, a Danny/Casey shipper, but up to this point, it's pretty obvious that Danny's love, though true, is unrequited. Oh, Casey loves him, but he doesn't love him. You know? I've never watched all the episodes in order, so maybe that changes as the final season progresses, but at this point, it's all very sad for Danny. And, in truth, he deserves someone much nicer than Casey, who is only a big clueless doof 99% of the time.

The combination of watching CSI:Miami and Sports Night on Monday somehow stuck the Speed/Dan pairing in my head. [livejournal.com profile] alethialia thought it would be bad because, you know, nothing in common, but I think they have more in common than first meets the eye. The real problem, though, is that, even if he doesn't return Danny's feelings, Casey and Danny pretty much are soulmates and that really throws a monkey wrench into all other romantic relationships eventually.

I am thinking, though, about Speed's boyfriend in the AU. I'm plotting and planning, my friends. Muahahaha.

It's strange, because when you speak to someone involved in fandom, they understand. But when you speak to someone outside it, they give you this look. I don't like to read too much into the look, because it's not often flattering. The look gets worse when you try to explain slashdom. And you're right, it doesn't even occur to you until you see it from someone elses perspective.

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. You should see the looks on people's faces when it's not you the fandom member explaining it, but your father the minister with a gleeful expression, as though it is the most interesting hobby since they invented log rolling.

I speak from experience.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*chokes*

Oh, my.
Gleeful? *dies*

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. You'd have to know my dad, but it really is priceless. He also likes to pick out pairings for me to slash when he watches TV, but he always picks out really disturbing pairings. Although he's a big Harm/Clay (JAG) shipper. My mom just shakes her head at both of us; I think she finds it vaguely disturbing that my father and I share a crush on Andrea Parker.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That is great. So, so great.
I need someone... anyone.. in RL who'll do that.
Poor woman obviously missed that memo.

....Like what pairings does he chose? (oi.)

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The most disturbing one I can never remember the names of. It was that creepy serial killer guy on Profiler and the guy with the oxygen tank, and IIRC they turned out to be father and son. Stuff like that. Boundaries don't seem to concern him all that much; really I think he's just in it for the shock value.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That is disturbing.
And it sounds like he is. Oh, well........

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Not Profiler. Pretender. I always mistype that. Always.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Got it, then.
No biggee! (I have things I always mistype. Is so frustrating!)

[identity profile] nekosmuse.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*blinks*

*blinks again*

Um, I don't even know how to respond to that. I think I might pay to see that. Damn.

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure he'd let you watch for free. He might even pick out some new pairings for you too. ::rolls eyes:: My dad is his own biggest fan.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I love those stories about your dad.

My mom is only confused by fandom. She just doesn't understand why anyone would spend so much time on it.

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Speed/Danny could work. But then, I'm the one pairing him with Martin, and everyone but you thinks I'm crazy, so don't take my advice.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And I really want to do it, actually, but I feel like it's going to be hard enough to get Speed out of Florida without having to manuever Danny out of New York because unless Casey were dead, there's no way Dan would move across the country. It's not that Danny thinks he ever has a chance with Casey, but they are pretty much joined at the hip.

God, it would be interesting to write though...

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's an AU. They could just be there without the complications. Hell, they could have known each other from NY. Speed's originally from there. Is it blasphemous to suggest that you just pretend there is no such thing as a Casey in Dan's past as far as your AU goes? Probably. But I never did know when to keep my mouth shut.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no. There has to be a Casey in Danny's past, but hell, I think I just figured something out if I AU the last half of S2 for SN as well...

Imagine the angst!

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...have Danny sent to cover some sports thing. He doesn't have to move permanently, does he? (and he'd go, but, no.. you're right. He wouldn't leave Casey to move. He just.. wouldn't. Not even for Laker Girls. *snerk*)

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But he would leave Casey if he thought it would make Casey happy. I think it's pretty obvious Dan would do anything, up to and including assisting in his pursuit of the craziest woman ever Dana.

So what if, instead of instituting the super-crazy 6-month dating rule, Dana just dates Casey in the beginning of season 2? After what happened with Casey's ex-wife, Danny is aware that Casey is more than willing to sabotage his romantic relationships in order to maintain his relationship with Danny. If he thought Casey was going to do that again, I can see him trying to remove himself from the equation. The station is in trouble at that point and Danny's in the middle of a pretty serious bout with depression, so I can see him just deciding to get the hell out and move as far away as he can...

Hmmm....

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You do have a valid point. though, much as I love Natalie, she's the ONYL one crazy enough to keep up with Dana. Ahhh! Poor Danny! (dear lords, I will have to read this. Gah. My OPT bleeds. Bleed, OTP, bleed. ^.^)

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
When watching the episodes in order, it becomes apparent that Natalie is the instigator of nearly all the craziness.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Natalie is evil. There's just no way around it. *nod*

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You are so right about poor Danny. Casey is so clueless and it is so sad. *sniffles*
Did I mention I adore Danny?
(and I haven't seen them in order yet.. we watched the first dvds last.... but.. !!)

...Clearly, this boy needs some love. Bring on your pairing, and I'll try to watch up on CSI: Miami. ^.^ (I have trouble with that one because I can't stand the guy in charge there. *shudders* But..)

I can't seem to make my brain work out what 'WaT' would be. Help, pretty please? *pathetic look*

Also, fandom IS fucking funny. And freaky to explain. I hate seeing outsiders look at it..especially when they aren't amused but outside of it. *sweatdrop*

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wat = Without a Trace. The show after CSI on Thursdays.

I also avoided watching CSI:Miami because of Caruso (I think he looks like a demented muppet), but Speed and Calleigh make up for it.

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You've gotta watch Session 9. I swear I hated Caruso until I saw him in that movie. Changes your whole perspective on his acting.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not his acting. It's is creepily mobile facial features.

Gah.

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. See, this is not a problem for me, because I hardly ever actually 'watch' TV while I'm watching TV. The few hours a week I carve out for TV viewing are my quilting time, so I only look up when one of my characters is on the screen or something particularly interesting is going on. So no Muppet-face Caruso for me if I can help it.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, right. I know that one.. *has no brain. at all*

*laughs* I love it! Is he the one I hate? (I've gotten so bad at names lately..)
The other characters are pretty great. And I need to watch tv more. *mourns* But my roommates are always using it. Will try to get better about CSI & CSI: Miami.

[identity profile] ruggerdavey.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
AU! AU! Eee!

Also, I have this to say about all your Danny/Casey analysis: Word.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
She got it completely right, didn't she?

...and gah. That's why I don't like the Casey-wants-Dan-but-Danny-doesn't-want'Casey stories. They don't feel right at all to me. *shakes head*
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Or... 'Casey-KNOWS-he-loves-Danny-but-Danny-has-to-realize' 'cuz WTF? The worst of both worlds!

My Danny loves Casey, whether he admits it to himself or not, and my Casey is a clueless dick at best.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost as bad are the 'Casey-realizes-he-loves-Danny' stories because, dudes, it took a YEAR AND A HALF of being told he was interested in Dana (and vice versa) for it to filter through. Casey doesn't 'just realize' anything when it comes to emotions.

Emotionally, he's even younger than his own son. For real.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Much, much younger. Poor Charlie, the clueful one...... *shakes head*

[identity profile] ruggerdavey.livejournal.com 2003-10-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Not at all. Dan is so very much in love with Casey. And Casey is just obivious. They truly are solumates, though.

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-09 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. 110%. Poor Danny..........

Must. Get. Series. *whimper*

[identity profile] khaoskat.livejournal.com 2003-10-09 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I know. I saw it this summer. But.. no money... (and no DVD player any more..) *cries*

[identity profile] alethialia.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
alethialia thought it would be bad because, you know, nothing in common

Hey! I didn't say it would be bad. I just said I was doubtful, and then once you explained I said it'd been nice for Speed. Really, writers can convince me of anything.

Like I would ever want to keep you from writing this. ;)

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point, I think I'm probably going to even though it'll make the AU nearly as much about Speed and Danny as it is Greg and Nick. Maybe once I establish the universe through Greg/Nick I'll just alternate stories...

[identity profile] alethialia.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa! Hold the presses! I'm confused. So is this Speed/Danny going to be a part of the Nick/Greg SF AU?

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, man. And to think it started so simply. [livejournal.com profile] carolinecrane had this AU bunny about neither Greg nor Nick going to Vegas, but then they meet somewhere else. I ran with the idea and created the SanFran AU. Then I started watching Miami and discovered lots of love in my heart for Speed. So I decided to import him to the AU and give him a better boyfriend then Delko could ever be (if he weren't, you know, straight). I was planning on creating an OC for Speed, but then I started watching the Sports Night DVDs and got the idea for Danny/Speed and it all went crazy from there.

[identity profile] alethialia.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa. That's...complicated. But, wait, how is that going to work if Nick/Greg are in SF, Danny's in NY, and Speed's in Miami.

See, I thought you were talking about starting another AU.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've already figured out how to get Danny to SF pretty easily here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/carleton97/37360.html?thread=119280#t119280).

Now I just have to work on Speed.

Or, maybe I should just think about another AU...

[identity profile] alethialia.livejournal.com 2003-10-09 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...

I don't know. Every writer has different styles, but if it were me, I'd separate them out. The burden of getting all those guys in one place at one time and being able to tell their stories meaningfully is...a lot to do. Not that I'm saying it can't be done. I'm just saying it's going to be incredibly complex.

So good luck!!

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2003-10-09 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I'm reconsidering the combination.
