things

1. I do not have the emotional fortitude to instruct an entire fandom on the difference between alternate universe and alternate history. Therefore, unnamed fandom, SHUT UP with your intense discussions of same. You are giving me a headache.

2. I have a pile of UFOs on my desk. Unfinished objects, that is. Christmas presents for Jane and Mrs. Jane's Mom, a baby shower present for Bryn, a scarf, and a pair of socks. Also a ball of roving attached to to my spinning wheel.

3. Question for MN hiatus!con folk. It's the 27th - 29th, right?

Yup, 27th to 29th!

At least you have a physical pile of stuff, mine's still in a mental pile of ideas! wonderment! low on cashness!

I WILL MAKE YOU, FLEECY PUDDLEJUMPER, IF IT'S THE LAST THING I DO.

I'm totally hauling knitting with me. I've got too much to do!

Maybe my spinning wheel too. Heh. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

[identity profile] fan-this.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Whoot knitting! I will gaze at you enviously and coo over everything you make because I can't knit and am very impressed by people who can.

I think it would be extremely freaky to get in an elevator and there's a random person with a spinning wheel just standing there like it's no big deal. Therefore, you should totally do it.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Sadly, I do not have a cinderella-style wheel. But the ultra-modern Louet S-17.

Ooo, I just made "Fetching" from Knitty.com's summer issue, and am in love with it - I'm planning to turn out at least a couple of pair for Christmas presents.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Fetching was such a fun knit! Did you use the proscribed yarn, or did you sub?

My LYS didn't have the Debbie Bliss yarn, but it did have the Rowan cashmerino so I used that.

Let's see - I used Lorna's Laces shepherds wool in cranberry the first time, and I'm using a wool/silk blend in black this. I didn't have the 6 dpns the first time around and they're a little big for my hands, so I'm knitting the silk with 5s, and it's looking gorgeous.

Frustration, though - I've always knitted in the round using circs, and this is my first experience with doublepoints. The Crystal Palace bamboos are beautiful, but one splintered after two inches, and I know it wasn't my fault. Ever have this problem?

[identity profile] bbennett.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't write - I meant to say I used 7s on the first pair. I also wasn't wild about the picot edge, so I'm going to drop a stitch per rib repeat and just rib the knuckles. But still - cute project!

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I made my pair for someone else so I didn't have to live with the picot edging - I thought it was a bit cutsey too - but I'd probably do what you're doing if I make a pair for me.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
All my bamboo dpns are the cheapie Clover ones and I've never had any of them splinter. One of my 1s is a little bent, but they're so thin I'm not surprised.

I prefer dpns because my knitting form sucks and I can prop my left hand needle on my stomach to help out my useless non-dominant left hand.

I'm trying to get over that, though, because I love making socks, but not the process of making TWO, so I'm going to try out knitting two on one long circ: http://www.misocrafty.squarespace.com/journal/2006/1/30/turkish-cast-on-tutorial.html

I have got SO MUCH SOCK YARN and exactly three unmatched socks. I suck. I saw the article on the recent knitty about knitting two at a time and am contemplating trying it, but I'm a very sporatic knitter (I painted all summer, but cold weather makes me want to knit), so I don't know if it'll 'stick' with me.

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm staring at the leg of sock #2 of a pair of Trekking ones right now. I had to rip back the heel flap last night when a stitch magically disappeared so I'm feeling pretty pissy about the whole thing.

My brother is a total AC nazi so it was SO HOT in here most of the summer so the very idea of touching wool made me want to die. But the weather broke last week and it's been about 30 - 40 since then, so I'm reinvigorated.

My kickstart was a weekend in Maine, knitting in front of the fire at my friend's house, which was built in 1774. I figured if that wasn't inspiration, nothing was.

I keep thinking about getting a drop spindle, but remind myself "NO. YOU DO NOT NEED YET ANOTHER INTEREST THAT REQUIRES BOTH TIME AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT". But still - how cool would spinning have been in front of that fire?

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That would have been amazingly cool.

Spinning is your friend. You want to spin. Spinning is your friend...

OK, off topic, but it's fetching related, so not really. :) I actually just posted this on Knitty's board, then remembered we'd just discussed the pattern. Any thoughts?

/cut and paste

I'm on the first glove of my second pair, and while I love the pattern, I'm having the same issue that I did with my first pair - when I pick up the two stitches on either side of the thumb to form the thumb tube, I end up with gaping holes.

On the first pair, I closed the holes by weaving in yarn ends through them, thinking maybe it was a gauge issue (the pair ended up a bit looser than I wanted). For the second pair, I both tightened my knitting and went down a needle size, but while the glove itself turned out well, I still have the holes where I picked up the stitches (which I did by picking up the outside loop of each of the two stitches closest to the thumb). Pulling tightly almost seemed to make the holes worse.

I can certainly 'fix' the holes as I did on the first pair, but I'd obviously like to figure out the proper way to knit them. My LYS owner suggested twisting the stitches, but is that what others do to avoid the problem? Am I incorrect in assuming I should only pick up one side (the outside loop) of the stitch?

[identity profile] carleton97.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You've just hit on my main problem with making gloves of any kind. No matter *what* I do I end up with the holes. I think I'm just a sucky knitter.
